Discipleship
Over the years we have developed the idea of sending teams of members
to visit other people with disabilities in their homes, hospitals, group
homes, and nursing homes in order to minister to
others. Everyone needs to be able to serve and to learn how to reach out
to others. Many of the people that we visit are not able to come to our
services because of their disabilities, but love us to come to them. We
have noticed that the members of the teams are usually those who show the
most spiritual growth and maturity, as they are learning to use their
gifts in serving God.
Where Do We Go?
We believe that Christians grow as disciples by learning to serve one another. Many of our folks have been served by others all their lives, but have not had many opportunities to serve others. One way we are trying to encourage this is by gathering those who are interested into outreach teams, who will visit others with disabilities that may be more severe than theirs, so they can serve these friends, holding hands, pushing a wheelchair, praying for them, talking with them, and becoming a friend.
Our teams go to a variety of places in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, Maple Ridge, and Abbotsford. We try to visit regularly, to sing, pray, and enjoy friendship. Some teams go during the day and some in the evening. Many individuals we minister to have very few visitors (and perhaps none that are not PAID to be there), so our time together is especially important. Our visits may be the only times the name of Jesus is spoken, that hymns and songs of worship and prayers are offered in many of these homes, and we believe this can be a great blessing to the residents and even the staff.
International Teams
When we
are invited to visit ministries and friends, we try to take a team with
us. Thus a team has traveled to Australia, and we have visited New Zealand
three times with teams of five to seven people. We have also been to
Hawaii, California, Florida, New Hampshire, and many places around British
Columbia and Washington State. We have also traveled to
Taiwan twice. We travel with the intent to
follow Jesus and to be a blessing. Plans for future trips include New
Zealand (2010), Newfoundland, and China (2011?).
